🌐 What is a Website?
A website is an online platform made up of web pages that can be accessed through the internet. It allows individuals, businesses, or organizations to share their creations, products, services, news, or any type of information with a global audience.
Broadly, websites can be classified into two main types:
- Personal websites – blogs, portfolios, or hobby sites that focus on individual expression and sharing knowledge or experiences.
- Professional websites – created for business or organizational purposes, such as promoting products and services, running online stores, publishing news, or providing professional resources.
💡 A Real Life Experience
I recently built a demo website for a photo framing business. The owner loved it and wanted to take his business online, but he was nervous because he didn’t understand the basics of websites. Even his daughter, who works in digital marketing, wasn’t clear about simple things like the difference between a domain and hosting.
This made him feel discouraged and think that websites were too complicated. I explained everything step by step and assured him that with a little effort and patience, anyone can manage a website. Once he starts adding products and receiving orders, he’ll realise how easy it really is. To make the process smoother, I also offered one month of support. However, he got confused and decided to drop the project. Click the link below to see demo websites:

So, before approaching a web developer, it is essential to understand the basic structure and working of a website.
🛠️ How to Create a Website
There are two main ways to build a website:
- Build from Scratch – This method requires technical skills in Coding, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It allows complete customization, but is usually done by professional developers.
- Use Ready-Made Platforms – These are much easier to set up and don’t require advanced coding knowledge. Below are the popular platforms:
- WordPress – The most popular and flexible option, suitable for almost any type of website, including blogs, business sites, and e-commerce stores.
- Shopify – Specifically designed for online stores, making it ideal for e-commerce businesses.
- Wix – Beginner-friendly but has limitations, such as mandatory hosting on Wix servers and fewer customization options compared to WordPress.
🧩 Basic Structure of a Website
To fully understand how a website works, you need to know about domains and hosting.
- Domain: This is the name of your website on the internet, like google.com or amazon.com. You must register your preferred domain name with a domain registrar. Each registrar has different domain extensions, such as .com, .org, .shop, etc. Almost every country has its own domain registry, .in (India), .us (USA), .uk (UK), .au (Australia), and .ru (Russia), etc, are examples. The main purpose of a domain name is to give the website a unique identity, so that your website can be recognized among millions of other websites. It works just like a person’s name in a crowd—when you call out the name, you can easily find and identify the person. Similarly, a domain name helps people to find and identify your website on the internet.
- Hosting: This is the service that stores all your website’s content, such as text, images, and videos, on a server and makes it available for the audience. There are many hosting companies around the world that rent out this server space to website owners. Some well-known hosting providers are Hostinger, Bluehost, and GoDaddy. When someone types your website’s domain name into the browser, the hosting company’s server delivers your website’s data so they can see it online. The speed and performance of your site depend heavily on the quality of your hosting provider. Choosing a reliable provider ensures smooth performance and a better visitor experience.
💰 Cost for a Website
You may have seen advertisements claiming that they can build you a website for just ₹2,000 or ₹3,000. For the people who don’t know anything about websites may think it’s genuine, but in reality, it’s misleading.
Here’s what usually happens: they create a subfolder on their own hosting account and install a ready-made WordPress template or an AI-generated website in it.
Yes, the website will appear online, but it won’t be your own website. Instead, it will exist as a subfolder under their domain. This means:
- Search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo will not recognize it as a genuine website.
- You won’t be able to advertise it properly.
- You can’t sell products or build a trusted online presence with it.
- They may let you add products to their original websites. But remember that you are adding products to their website, not yours.
In simple terms, it’s just a dummy website. Think of it like buying only the body of a car and parking it in your porch—it may look like you own a car, but it won’t actually run or take you anywhere. Cheap websites work the same way: they look real but are practically useless.
🌐 Domain and Hosting
If you want a real, functional website, you must buy two things:
- Domain name – the address of your website (e.g., yourbusiness.com).
- Hosting service – the server space that stores your website’s files and makes it available online.
Both are rental services, which means you need to renew them every year. Some providers offer multi-year packages at discounted rates, which can reduce the yearly cost.
Without these two, your website cannot exist independently.
🌐 Domain
A domain is your website’s online identity. Costs vary depending on the registry with which you registered:
- .in → around ₹900/year
- .com → around ₹1,400/year
- Specialized domains like .shop (for e-commerce) or .marketing (for agencies), etc., usually cost ₹2,500/year or more.
💡 Many hosting providers offer a free domain for the first year when you purchase a hosting package. After that, you’ll need to pay for renewal.
🖥️ Hosting
Hosting is the service that makes your website available over the internet whenever someone searches for it. Hosting costs vary depending on the company and the plan you select.
- Costs start from around ₹3,000 per year
- Multi-year packages (3–4 years) can be cheaper
Your choice of hosting plan directly affects:
- Speed & Performance – how fast your website loads
- Security – protection from cyber attacks
- Storage & Capacity – how much content and how many websites you can host
For example:
- A basic plan may include 25GB of storage and allow 25 websites.
- A business plan may include 50GB storage & allow 50 websites. Also, providing higher processing power (which means the website will load faster).
- Higher plans also include features like:
- Daily backups
- CDN (Content Delivery Network) – for faster loading all over the world
- AI tools for content creation & management
- Stronger security options
You can upgrade your plan anytime as your website grows.
👉 On these hosting plans, you can install a WordPress website or even build a professionally tailored website, depending on your needs and technical skills.
🛠️ Other Platforms
Platforms like Shopify and Wix use their own servers to host your website. You cannot migrate the website to another hosting company or install a WordPress website on it.
- Shopify → around ₹15,000 per year for the basic plan (best for e-commerce).
- Wix → starts at around ₹2,500 per year (beginner-friendly but with limitations).
👉 Platforms like Shopify and Wix limit you to their own tools and servers. You don’t need separate hosting, but you need to buy a domain name.
💰 Cost of Building a Website
The cost of building a website depends on many factors, such as how it is built, who builds it, and what features you need.
If you are planning to build an exclusive website from scratch, you’ll need to approach a professional web development company. The cost for that can vary widely, and it’s hard to give an estimate.
Here, let’s focus on WordPress websites, which are the most popular and cost-effective option.
WordPress Website Costs
To build a decent WordPress website, you generally need a budget of around ₹20,000 to ₹50,000, not including domain and hosting charges. Also, you need to pay for pro versions of themes and plugins. Click here to know more about the WordPress website:👉What is a WordPress Website
Options for building a WordPress website:
- Hire a web development company
- Hire a freelance web developer (I can do that – if you are interested, or you can find a freelance web developer on platforms like Fiverr or Upwork)
- Or, if you have enough knowledge of HTML & CSS, you can build it yourself.
Physical Store v/s Online Business Store
Imagine a business website as a physical store:
- To start a business, you first need a space and a name → this is like hosting & domain.
- Next, you need to set up the shop (carpentry, electrical work, interiors, etc.) → this is like the work of a web developer.
- Finally, you need equipment such as printers, computers, etc, in your physical store → On a website, these are the plugins that add extra features (like payment gateways, forms, or product galleries).
Just like you can’t do all the work to set up a physical store, building a professional website usually requires expert help and some investment.
Summary
- The cost for building a WordPress website usually falls between ₹20,000 and ₹50,000, excluding the cost for plugins, domain, and hosting.
- The actual cost depends on your requirements and budget—no developer can give you an exact figure without these details.
- Always ask the developer to provide at least one month of support. This will give you time to get used to managing your website.
- Integrating your website with Google Analytics helps you to monitor the customers’ interaction on your website. Click here to know more about Google Analytics:👉Importance of Integrating your Website with Google Analytics and Search Console
⚠️ Note: These costs are only rough estimates. The final price can vary depending on the developer you choose, the features, and the complexity of your website.
